This summer good friends directed my attention to Haven House in East Lansing and the great work they do as the area's only "family" homeless shelter. A few minutes on their website (HavenHouseEL.org) and I was hooked. Donating, buying the collection of tailgate recipe cookbooks, applying to become a volunteer (I passed the background check!) and exploring how I could help with fundraising.

Up until now, my involvement has primarily been as an office assistant on Sunday mornings and it has been life changing. Seriously, who gets up at 7 am on Sundays?

Prospective residents are instructed to call in each morning at 8 am to learn if a room has become available. A binder of prospective resident phone intake forms is updated with each call. Logging who called, the time and "where did you stay last night". The majority of the dozen or so callers each day are fortunate to be staying with friends or family ("with ex-Mother-in-Law" caught my attention, eek) but there are usually a few "in our car" or "outside" answers.

In the summer, staying outside or in your car can be considered "camping". In the winter it is life threatening. All of these prospective residents have children with them. That's why I'm here.

I have met many wonderful adult residents of Haven House. Hard workers doing their best for their family after being "thrown a curve"/"dealt a bad hand". They make excellent use of the guidance and stability of an "up to 30 day stay" at Haven House to catch their breath, dust themselves off, save up some money, etc. before getting back into residential society..

I have met a few "not so wonderful" adult residents of Haven House too. The exceptions that help us all appreciate the majority.

I'm here for the kids. I'm going to beg, borrow and appeal to my friends and family for the kids.

I'm going to hustle, bustle, possibly pull a muscle (will do odd jobs for tips) for the kids.

My greatest asset is my family and friends. Please help me leverage that asset for Haven House and for the kids.
